Should I detoxify?

Some of us have heard about detoxifying our bodies... There are books, websites and even a small amount of information on this topic on some health television shows. Many people are asking the questions:

  • Should everyone do this?
  • Why?
  • How is it done?
  • Will it hurt?
  • Is it gross?
  • What will happen after the detoxification process?

Let's start in the beginning. Cleansing the body is a very ancient custom. The process varies from culture to culture. Christians celebrate the season of Lent to fast and cleanse the body and spirit in a conscious 40-day process. Throughout the Bible, fasting and using herbs to cleanse is mentioned. Traditional Indians use various fruits and herbs for internal cleansing. Specifically, the ancient medical system known as Ayurvedics offers the dried fruit Triphala to cleanse. Ancient Chinese customs offer cleaning herbs for the purpose of removing toxins from the body to facilitate healing. Older Americans used substances like Cod Liver Oil throughout the year to stay healthy. Today, we certainly worm our dogs and cats, horses, cows, and just about every other animal in which we come in contact. Why wouldn't we be cleansing ourselves? The tradition of cleaning out the body seems to have stopped altogether around the time of the industrial revolution in our culture. Curiously, we live in a more polluted environment, eat more toxic food, and are stressed like no other group of people have ever experienced. Yet, we know very little about cleaning our bodies. We all need it more now than ever. The fact is that we are biological creatures. We have warm nutrient rich bodies that are very attractive to parasites. We walk on soil, drink water, eat food, and breath air. Any and all of these activities can introduce toxins and parasites into the body.

The effect of internal parasites and toxins is degeneration. If the toxic condition is left to persist, the result will be chronic disease. Currently, approximately every other American already has at lease one chronic disease. Most of these diseases did not exist before the industrial revolution.

The process of detoxification is as simple or comprehensive as you would like it to be. Natural Holistic Health recommends an annual parasite, digestive, liver, kidney and emotional cleanse. This involves incorporating some herbs in pill form into the daily routine. Rest, moderate exercises, whole food meals, antioxidant teas, detox baths, and breathing exercises are added to a suggested routine for the duration of the detoxification process. There are many detoxification products on the market. Some advice when shopping for a detox solution: * If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. * You didn't accumulate your toxins in one week. * Your body will not eliminate them in one week either. * Beware of miraculous cure claims. * Once size does not fit all.

Generally people experience increased bowel function, and increased kidney function during a cleanse. Sometimes people experience irritability, or sluggishness as the body works to cleanse itself. Overall, all symptoms are minor as self-cleansing is a normal function of the body. Detoxification does not hurt. It can be gross depending upon your level of fascination. It certainly is not something that can't be managed with discretion. It is imperative that everyone drinks substantial amounts of water during a detoxification process.

After a cleanse, most people experience brighter eyes, elimination of aches and pains, clearer thinking, calmer nerves, increased energy, reduced fatigue, clearer skin, reduced tummy bulge, and generally a healthier glow.

Returning to ancient cleaning rituals could mean the difference between experiencing the level of heath we desire and becoming lifelong customers to pharmaceuticals to deal with chronic illness. Make cleaning a normal part of your family yearly health regime. We wish you the greatest health and vitality.
